THE SINGLE SOURCE OF TRUTH FOR
Gasoline Consumption
Our Motor Fuels Index has over 40 years of tracking gasoline purchase behaviors and trends to offer unmatched insights.
The U.S. motor fuels industry has changed tremendously over the last twenty years, as nontraditional retailers have entered the competitive landscape. The pandemic caused a significant, and in many cases, permanent change to what, when, and where many consumers drive in a typical week.
We help our clients and retail partners understand consumer mindset around gasoline purchase behaviors. Purchase decisions go beyond just price. Station location, brand loyalty, and incentives play a key role. More recently, the pandemic-driven shift in mobility patterns has caused many of our clients to completely reexamine their entire go-to-market approach.

"The rush-hour commute has been replaced by short trips close to home and road trips for a long weekend getaway, all while consumers fulfil their 9-to-5 obligations. Driving-based recreation is at an all-time high, with over one-third of consumers owning a boat, RV, ATV, or other motorized equipment. We’ve tossed traditional thinking about mobility out the window to help our clients reframe thinking about their future."

Insights in Action
There are 20 million more vehicles in the aftermarket ‘sweet spot’ — those beyond their original warranty — than there were in 2020. Older cars mean more maintenance activity, but the cost of that maintenance can add up fast, leading consumers to find ways to save, including taking on some of it themselves.
